David Russell Thoresen

David Russell Thoresen, 72, passed away peacefully after a long battle with colon and lung cancer on Friday, May 5, 2017, at East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center with his family at his side. Born on June 20, 1944, in Springfield, MA, son of Russell C. and Winifred (Farnsworth) Thoresen, he was raised and educated in Springfield and graduated from Springfield Technical High School. David was a Vietnam War veteran who served his country honorably as a Specialist 5, in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he attended and graduated from the Culinary Arts Institute in New Haven, CT and worked for several years as a cook at the former Valley Steak House in Springfield. David continued his education and graduated from Springfield Technical Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Environmental Science. He married his beloved wife, Carol-Louise (Ryan) Thoresen on August 29, 1970, and together they resided in Westfield, MA and Somers, CT, before moving to Enfield, CT in 1982 and living there ever since. David was employed by the Town of Enfield, CT for many years. He worked in the Water Pollution Dept. and with Building and Grounds. He also worked for a brief period of time for the Hazardville Water Company, before returning to his employment with the Town of Enfield. Before and after his retirement, he owned and operated his own businesses, Rebecca’s Root Beer and Jonathan’s Kettle Korn. He worked at many events in Western Mass and all of Connecticut for the last twelve years. David was a member of Christadelphian Ecclesia of Springfield, MA and was devoted to Bible studies. He enjoyed many activities and hobbies throughout his life, especially cooking, and watching the Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. David leaves behind his loving wife, Carol-Louise, of Enfield; and daughter, Rebecca Anne (Thoresen) Ellis and her husband, Christopher, of Enfield, and son, Jonathan Thoresen of Enfield, CT; two cherished grandchildren, Jayden David and Tegan Russell; brothers, Richard Versailles and his wife Stacy, of New Hartford, CT, and Carl Thoresen and his wife, Norene, of Enfield; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his two beloved children, Russell Carl and Sara Elizabeth Thoresen; and other beloved parents, Pauline Thoresen formerly of Enfield, Ugo Salier formerly of Springfield, MA, Joanne Salier, formerly of Largo, FL. Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, May 10, for a period of visitation from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave., Springfield, MA, followed by a procession to Hillcrest Park Cemetery, 895 Parker St., Springfield, for his committal service and burial.
