Helen Smith

Helen Mary Smith, 92, of Springfield was called home to the Lord on June 19, having passed peacefully at home after a long life, filled with love and purpose. Helen was born April 24, 1925 in West Springfield MA, the youngest child of John and Mary (Stepniak) Borowik. She attended schools in Springfield and graduated from Classical High School. Helen was a member and communicant of Holy Name Church. She met the love of her life, Norman, while working at The Springfield Armory where he was training the Woman Ordinance Workers who were replacing the men who were serving in the armed forces. Shortly thereafter, they married and Norman enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After WWII, Helen stayed at home to raise her children. Once they were in school, she became employed at Mass Mutual Life Insurance Co., in Group Administration. After retiring, Helen and Norman enjoyed traveling to the Holy Land, Africa, Italy, and Hawaii. They spent many wonderful summers at their cottage in Litchfield Maine, where Helen would row her boat every morning late into her eighties. Helen was predeceased by her parents and her three brothers, Stanley, Mitchell and Theodore Borowik. Helen is survived by her loving husband, Norman, to whom she was married for 73 years. She is also survived by her four children, Norman H. Smith II and wife, Rebecca of Westfield; Barbara J. Bendtson of Springfield; Richard J. Smith and wife, Joni of Litchfield Maine, and Frances M. Haley of Springfield; 9 grandchildren, Donna Lusignan, Norman Smith III, Alan Smith, Pamela Hitchcock, Christopher Bendtson, Jaclyn Goodhue, Bethany Grant, Shawn Haley and Matthew Haley; 12 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; as well as several nieces and nephews and a special sister-in-law, Vera Borowik of Connecticut. Visiting hours will be Wednesday, June 21, from 4 pm – 6 pm at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Avenue, Springfield. Helen’s funeral will be held on Thursday, June 22, beginning at 8:30 AM from Hafey Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 9:30 AM, at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St., Springfield, MA 01108. Burial will follow immediately at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Helen’s memory to Holy Name Church. www.hafeyfuneralservices.com
