John J. Sullivan

John J. Sullivan passed away at his home surrounded by loving family on November 1, 2017, a day short of his 91st birthday. He was the son of the late William F. and Helen (Bresnahan) Sullivan. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Phyllis (Berkwitts) Sullivan and his brother, William F. Sullivan, Jr., and sister, Margaret M. Sullivan. He graduated from Cathedral High School, College of the Holy Cross (B.A.), AIC (M.A.), and UMass Amherst (Ed.D.). John served in the US Navy (1944-1946) mostly in the Pacific Theater. He worked for the Springfield Public Schools as an elementary school teacher and Director of Federal and State Projects/Grants Manager for 40 years. He was elected President of the Springfield Education Association and President of the Hampden County Teachers Association, and served as Director from the Hampden East Chapter for the Retired Educators Association of Mass (REAM) for over ten years. He leaves his nine children: Martha Loftus of Southboro, MA; Hillary Sullivan of Hudson, Ohio; Andrew Sullivan (Elane Stock) of Atlanta, GA; Lydia Coriell of Moorestown, NJ; Elizabeth Meindl (Robert) of Wayland, MA; Sarah Auvil (Paul) of Saratoga, CA; Gregory Sullivan (Deborah) of Granby, CT; Hope Sullivan of Minden, NV, and Deirdre L. Sullivan, Ph.D. of Palo Alto, CA. He also leaves twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is survived by his sister Helen Fitzgerald, brothers, Thomas Sullivan and Dr. Robert Sullivan, and brother-in-law Lenny Stark and many nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, Nov. 6, for calling hours for John from 2-4 p.m. & 7-9 p.m. at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave. His funeral will be held on Tuesday Nov. 7, beginning at 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 221 Plumtree Rd., Springfield. Burial with military honors will follow immediately after the mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield.
