Dr Joseph M. Corcoran

Dr. Joseph M. Corcoran, 94, of Springfield, beloved husband, father, and grandfather died peacefully on July 11th surrounded by his loving family. Dr. Corcoran was born in 1923 to parents, Dr. George B. and Celia Corcoran. He graduated from West Springfield High School, and later received his bachelor degree from Brown University. Dr. Corcoran went on to earn his medical degree from Georgetown University and interned at Worcester City Hospital and Boston City Hospital. His postgraduate training was at the University of Pennsylvania in the field of Dermatology, serving his last year as chief resident. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and a member of many medical societies. Dr. Corcoran served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as a Lt. Jg. and was assigned as a fleet surgeon on the Icebreaker U.S.S. ATKA. Dr. Corcoran maintained a private practice in Dermatology in Springfield for 41 years. He was on staff of the Mercy Hospital, Baystate Medical Center, Noble Hospital, and the former Wesson Hospital. He was a communicant of both Sacred Heart Church and Holy Name Church both in Springfield. Dr. Corcoran’s hobbies included sailing, ice-skating, and traveling throughout the world. He and his family spent many happy summers at their family cottage on Lake Congamond, in Suffield, CT. At the lake as a young boy, he met a pretty young girl named Betty Allen of the age of thirteen. Little did he know that he would give her his Sigma Chi fraternity pin and that she would become his wonderful wife for so many years. He leaves his beloved wife of 68 years, Betty A. Corcoran; his four children, Cathleen Lavallee and her husband, Roger, Joseph Corcoran and his wife, Virginia, Judith Harris, and Susan Boyle and her husband, Brian; nine grandchildren and twelve great -grandchildren; and his sister, Celia Kenny. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Dr. George B. Corcoran, Jr.; sister, Alice Foley; and son in law, Robert Harris. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, July 17, for calling hours for Dr. Corcoran from 4-7 p.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave., Springfield. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 18, beginning at 10 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St. Committal prayers and burial with military honors will follow immediately after the Mass at Paucatuck Cemetery in West Springfield. The family would like to set up a memorial fund to honor Dr. Joseph Corcoran, Dr. George Corcoran, Jr., and Dr. George Corcoran, Sr., for their dedication to the community and Mercy Medical Center.
