Robert E. Ashley Jr.

Robert E. “Bud” Ashley, Jr., 90, beloved husband of 32 years, of Joanne Sylvia (Ribeiro) Ashley, who passed away in 1999, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 15, at East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center with his loving family at his side. Born on March 1, 1927, in Springfield, MA, beloved son of Robert E. Sr. and Mary (Moore) Ashley; he was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Robert served his country honorably as a Seaman Second Class on the USS Vega in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He was honorably discharged with meritorious service recognition in 1946. After the war, Robert began a long career as a long distance Truck Driver that spanned over 20 years with the former Chemical Corporation and Longmeadow Trucking Company. He changed career paths and later became an Iron Worker for twenty years, with the former Local 357, now Local 7 out of Springfield and Boston. He was a lifetime parishioner of Holy Name Church in Springfield, a dedicated member of American Legion Post 420 and a former member of the Elks of Springfield Lodge #61. He was also a member of Kid’s Around the Corner. Robert was a patron of the Blarney Stone on Carew St. in Springfield, and the former Mill River Café, where he spent many good times with his best friends Phil Gioranino and Paul W. “Mugsy” Murgolo. Along with being an avid Red Sox fan, he also enjoyed following the Patriots, Bruins and the New York Giants. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving daughters, Patti- jo Snow (Sean) of Bolivia, NC, Mary E. Feliciano (Danilo), Longmeadow, Linda G. Ashley and Ann F. Ashley both of Springfield; 10 cherished grandchildren, Jennifer and Kyley Maloney, Nicolas, Olivia, Joanna, and Owen Feliciano, Madison Ashley, Riah Ashley - Scott, David and Charles Ashley; two great grandchildren, Jacob Rosa and Richard Delgado; several nieces and nephews, Peter and Steven Van Eynde, Bruce, Barry, Kristine Pollard, and Kate Plaquet. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his sisters, Ruth Van Eynde and Bobbie Ashley Pollard. Visiting hours for Robert will be held on Monday, September 18 from 4-7pm at the Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave, Springfield. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, September 19, beginning at 9 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St., Springfield. Committal prayers and burial with military honors will follow immediately after the Mass at St. Michael’s Cemetery, 1601 State St., Springfield. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution can be made in Robert’s name to the Holyoke Soldier’s Home, 110 Cherry St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
