Robert M. Ryan

Robert Martin Ryan, eighty-five, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, July 24, at The East Longmeadow Skilled Nursing Center in East Longmeadow, MA. Mr. Ryan was born on September 25, 1931, in Springfield, MA. to Charles V. Ryan II and M.  Josephine (MacDonald) Ryan.  He was the fourth out of six very lucky and blessed children. As an elementary student, he attended Holy Name Grammar School in Springfield, and spent his high school years at Cathedral High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships.   Upon high school graduation, Robert attended Fordham University and New England College of Pharmacy, becoming a registered pharmacist, following in the footsteps of his beloved grandfather, Charles V. Ryan, who founded The Ryan Drug Company on April 1, 1895 on Main Street in Springfield.  Later, Mr. Ryan, along with his brother Donald, operated the Ryan Drug Company stores throughout the Springfield area, for many years. Robert loved and lived life to the fullest; he was known by his family as a happy and fun loving man, who enjoyed telling stories and singing songs with great gusto. He was a longtime parishioner at Holy Name Church in Springfield and a strong member of the community. Robert leaves behind his beloved wife, of thirty six years, Rosa (Porta) Ryan of Springfield, and children, Kathleen Ryan Reed of Enfield, CT, Marie Ryan-Brackett,   and her husband, Wax Brackett, of Belchertown, Robert M. Ryan, Jr. of Springfield,  Maureen Ryan of Florence, MA,  John C. Ryan and his wife, Ellen, of East Longmeadow, Julia Campbell of Brunswick, ME, and Linda Lavallee and her husband, Matthew, of South Hadley; siblings, Charles V. Ryan of Springfield, Philip Ryan of Tampa, FL, Mary Flahive of East Longmeadow, and Josephine Sears and her husband, Paul, of Springfield; twelve grandchildren and one great granddaughter, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his first wife, Mary (Martin) Ryan and by his beloved daughter, Elizabeth Josephine Ryan, as well as his brother, Donald Ryan. Family and friends are invited to gather on Saturday, July 29, for a period of visitation from 9 – 10 a.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave., Springfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St., Springfield. Committal prayers and burial will follow immediately after the Mass at The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield.
