Roland William Girard

Roland William Girard, 87, beloved husband of 57 years of Patricia L. (Christensen) Girard, passed on peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, September 25, 2017. He was born in Springfield, MA, on September 7, 1930, the son of Harold and Gladys (Thompson) Girard; he was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Roland served his country honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After serving his country proudly, Roland returned to Springfield and started a long career that spanned over fifty years as a mail handler with the Forest Park Branch of the United States Post Office. He loved all kinds of animals, but at an early age he had a special place in his heart for dogs. He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox, but his favorite spectator sport was college basketball. In 2000, while visiting family in Virginia, Roland came to a saving relationship with Jesus Christ and his faith in God was reflected in all that he said and did. Roland leaves behind his loving wife, Patricia, of Springfield; his children, William H. and his wife, Carla, of Gloucester, VA, Stephen J., of Hayes, VA; and Karen A. Girard, of Springfield; two adored grandchildren, Ashley Gough (Jordon Gough) and Troy Girard ,both of Gloucester, VA. Besides his parents, Roland was also predeceased by his brothers, Edward and John Girard. A private committal service with military honors will be held at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Agawam.
