Stephen J. Phillips

Attorney Stephen Joseph Phillips, of Longmeadow, MA., passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer on September 20, 2017. Stephen, known fondly as “BoBo”, was born in Springfield, MA and was a graduate of Cathedral High School, class of 1976. Steve graduated from Westfield State College and earned his law degree from Western New England School of Law. Steve was the 4th of seven children and is predeceased by his parents Cornelius W. & Mary Phillips. He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years and best friend Zita, his children Stephen J. Phillips Jr. of Springfield, Paul Phillips of Longmeadow and his fiance Tara, Brian Phillips and Briana of Longmeadow, Michael Phillips and Liz of Washington, DC and his youngest Katie McGowen of Longmeadow and her husband Scott. He also leaves behind his four legged best friend, Fairfield who never left his side. Steve also leaves his 6 siblings and their spouses, Neil and Cathy Phillips, Gerald Phillips, Kevin Phillips, Mary Phillips, Liz & Jim Fortsch, and Joe & Karen Phillips. Steve was a passionate and determined attorney with Dunn & Phillips, PC. He left a strong impact on his community and a lasting impression on everyone he met. He was an effective and diligent volunteer with the Baystate VNA & Hospice. He was a recipient of the Massachusetts Bar Association 'Access to Justice Pro Bono Publico' award in 2014, cited for free legal assistance for over 130 hospice patients. In 2015 he was honored with the prestigious Saint Thomas More Distinguished Lawyer award in recognition of his public service. Steve will be remembered for many things including working as a youth sports volunteer which included weekly mowings of the field hockey field for his daughter's team. His love of hockey, vacations on Cape Cod, and family gatherings at his home brought him great joy over the years. He was a wonderful husband, an incredible father, and a loyal friend. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. Steve and his family would like to express their extreme gratitude to Dr. Phil Glynn and his awesome staff for their compassion and dignity. Calling hours for Stephen will be held (TODAY) Friday September 22nd from 6 – 8 PM at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave. All are invited to meet for Stephen’s Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday September 23rd at 8 AM at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St. in Longmeadow followed by committal services at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Springfield.
