Susan Prentiss Boss

Susan Prentiss “Pren” (O’Toole) Boss, 88, beloved wife of 32 years to Eugene G. Boss, Jr., MD, who predeceased her in 1983, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her daughter’s home in Easthampton with her family at her side. Born on February 20, 1929, in Baltimore, MD, she was the loving daughter of Francis D. and Prentiss (Phillips) O’Toole. She was raised and educated in Baltimore and graduated from Notre Dame Academy, before attending and graduating from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. with a degree in Nursing. While attending Georgetown University she met her future husband, Eugene, who was also at Georgetown studying to fulfill his role as a physician. Not long after they met, they were married on June 16, 1951 and together they moved to Springfield in 1957, where Eugene opened his medical practice. Gene and Pren worked side by side as physician and nurse providing care in his office from 1977 to 1983. After Dr. Boss passed, Pren continued her career as a Registered Nurse at the Health Department of the City of Springfield, and at the age of 58, she received her Bachelor’s Degree from St. Joseph’s College of Maine. After her tenure with the Health Department in Springfield, Pren then dedicated another 12 years of service as a Registered Nurse at the West Springfield Health Department. Pren completed her career, retiring at the age of 81, after working with, the Council on Aging in West Springfield. She was a longtime resident of Springfield, first living on Florentine Gardens, Long Hill St., and most recently on Randolph Street. Pren was a devoted parishioner of Holy Name Church and was honored to be a member of Holy Name’s Hall of Fame. Pren’s volunteer work included many years of service to: The Cancer House of Hope, Ronald McDonald House, Springfield Soup Kitchen, and Shriner’s Hospital for Children. She leaves behind her loving children who will always cherish her memory, Susan C. Boss and her Husband Mark Brown of Easthampton, Dr. Eugene F. Boss and his wife, Eileen, of Belchertown, Mary P. Boss Withey and her husband, Jeffery, of Lebanon, CT, James M. Boss and his wife, Maribeth, of Keene, NH, Michael P. Boss and his wife, Linda, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Martha K. Stein and her husband, Noel, of Claremont, CA, Sarah E. Sullivan and her husband, Michael, of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Christopher O. Boss and his wife, Gretchen, of West Springfield, Sheila M. Boss Concannon and her husband, Peter, of Beverly, MA, and Thomas J. Boss and his wife, Mary, of Hampden; twenty eight adored grandchildren and twenty greatgrandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her twin sister, Etta (O’Toole) Pisano. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, April 6, for calling hours for Pren from 4-8 p.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave., Springfield, MA. Pren’s funeral will be held on Friday morning, April 7, with family and friends meeting directly at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St., for her Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Committal prayers and burial will follow immediately after the Mass at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Pren’s name may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, or the Springfield Rescue Mission.
