Apostolos “Paul” C. Kannavos, 93, beloved husband of 61 years of Desmendo “Diana” (Plumpides) Kannavos, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 12, at Chestnut Hill of East Longmeadow. Paul was born on May 10, 1928, in Kastania, Greece, the eldest son of Christos and Maria (Goyas) Kannavos. He was raised in Kastania and his family moved to Karditsa, Greece where he attended and graduated from high school. Paul subsequently served three years in the Greek Army, before immigrating to the United States in 1958 where he met and married Diana a year later. Paul started a career in hairdressing after attending Mansfield Beauty School. He owned and operated Paul’s Beauty Salon on Bridge St. in Springfield for over 15 years where he was well-known for creating beautiful updos. After he closed his shop, he owned several restaurants in the Springfield area including The Bistro Deli in Westfield and Princess Parlour Restaurants in Ludlow and Springfield. He loved to cook Greek dishes and travel back to his native Greece to spend time with his siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a longtime resident of Longmeadow and member of St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield. Paul leaves behind his wife, Diana, of Longmeadow, two daughters, Thamy K. Grogan of Longmeadow, and Mary K. Freeth (Joe) of Newbury Park, CA, and two cherished grandchildren, Christopher and Nina Grogan of Longmeadow. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Demetrios Kannavos and sister, Yiota Bourelis. A private funeral service will be held for Paul at Hafey Funeral Home in Springfield, followed by committal prayers and burial at Longmeadow Cemetery. There are no calling hours.
