Barbara G. Blinn of Longmeadow, MA and Hutchinson Island, FL, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019 at her home in Enfield, CT. Born in Holyoke, MA and a graduate of Holyoke High School, class of 1944. She received both her Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Reading from Westfield University. She was the reading consultant at Williams Middle School, Longmeadow, MA, until she retired in 1992. She began her teaching career at Liberty School in Springfield for two years. Then focused her energies on raising her family and serving her community. During her hiatus from teaching, she became a volunteer at Wesson Womens Hospital and served as President for two terms. She also served as Vice President of the Pioneer Valley Reading Council. She returned to teaching at Center School, first grade for two years, and upon receiving her Maters degree, she became the reading consultant at Williams Middle School in Longmeadow, until her retirement in 1992. During her years in the Longmeadow school system, she was an adjunct teacher at Westfield State College, published a paper “Questions for the Reading Specialist” in the Westfield State Reading Clinic Newsletter. She was one of twenty-three participants invited to a national conference at the University of Connecticut at Storrs, presenting a paper on Main Streaming. She taught several “in services courses” for fellow Longmeadow teachers on reading, phonics, and spelling rules. She also enjoyed being a volunteer at “Rays of Hope” and served on its board. After retiring from the Longmeadow school system, she became a volunteer reading tutor in the Vero Beach school system, served on the Board of Directors of Adult Literacy and volunteered at Vero Beach Museum of Art. Barbara was a former member of the Springfield, MA Library and Museum, the Longmeadow Country Club, the Vero Beach Country Club, and the Vero Beach Yacht Club. Her husband of 40 years, Robert T. Blinn died in 1990, her sister, Maryellen (Meg) Leahy Kelleher and brother, George Greaney, Jr preceded her in death. She leaves her three sons, Robert T. Blinn, Jr. and his wife Nancy Whitehead of West Springfield, MA, William Branden Blinn of Los Angeles, CA, and Barry Simes Blinn and his wife Mary Ellen Huckstep Labrecque of Tucson, Arizona; five grandchildren, Robert T. Blinn, III, , and his wife Jennifer Burns of Hopkington, MA, Kristine Blinn of Springfield, MA, Daniel Blinn and his wife Mary Ann of Chicopee, MA, Noell Blinn Smith and her husband, Hank Smith of Freedom Farm, FL, and Alex Blinn from Lady Lake, FL, and six great grandchildren, Trevor Thomas Blinn, Connor Patrick Blinn, Tristen Wesley Quick, Tyler Birch, and Isaac Blinn. Special thanks to Barbara’s extraordinarily loving care giver, Carol Censki along with her husband, John and their son, Shawn. Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, May 29, for calling hours for Barbara from 4 – 7 p.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Avenue, Springfield, MA 01108. Barbara’s funeral will be held on Thursday, May 30, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow, MA 01106. Committal prayers and burial will follow immediately after the Mass at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield.
