Ella May Gelling

Ella May Gelling, 98, died on Friday, October 6, 2017 at the JGS nursing home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of August and Gladys Schnepf. After graduating from Lincoln High School, she trained as a secretary and worked in Manhattan. In 1944, she married Arthur E. Gelling and moved to Liberty Corner, N.J. where they raised their three children and lived for 50 years. As child-rearing lessened, she returned to the workforce, serving as the headmaster’s administrative assistant at Gill St. Bernard’s school until her retirement. Ella May was an avid amateur naturalist, who thoroughly enjoyed camping, birding, hiking and all outdoor pursuits. She was an accomplished seamstress, cook, bridge player and tag sale enthusiast. After Arthur’s death in 1994, Ella May moved to the Glenmeadow retirement community in Longmeadow, MA, where she was an active 22-year resident until moving to JGS in March. She attended First Church of Christ in Longmeadow and had been a long-time member of the Rahway/Plainfield N.J. Quaker meeting. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by brothers Arthur, John and Robert Schnepf. She is survived by her children Stephen (Barbara) Gelling, Joanne (David) Bauer and David Gelling; grandchildren Adam Gelling, Graham (Mickie) Gelling, Reid Bauer and Ian (Mariota) Bauer; great-grandchildren Riley Gelling, Everett Gelling, Atticus Bauer and Violet Bauer. A memorial service will be held on October 28, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at First Church of Christ in Longmeadow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Glenmeadow Retirement Community, 24 Tabor Crossing, Longmeadow, MA 01106.
