James Gillick Fitzpatrick, MD, 89, beloved husband of Mary Patricia (Kelly) Fitzpatrick, who predeceased him on August 31, 2015, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home with his children at his side. James was born in Massena, NY, a son of Thomas and Marion (Gillick) Fitzpatrick. He was raised and educated in Massena and was a graduate of the Massena High School. He attended Niagara University where he met his loving wife and then received his M.D. at the University of Buffalo, School of Medicine.
James served his country honorably as a Captain in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Air Force. He then moved to Springfield in 1960 to begin his 45 year career as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist. James was beloved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him – from his family to the nurses, his office colleagues and partners, and his immeasurable number of patients and newborn babies – to all of whom he dedicated his life. He was well known for his professional, caring, and patient demeanor along with his trademark bow-ties. He was active in the community and especially within his local church parishes, Holy Name and St. Mary’s, where he and his wife were Eucharistic Ministers. He drew great comfort and inspiration from his religious faith throughout his entire life. James lived on Florentine Gardens in Springfield’s Forest Park neighborhood along with his wife, Patricia, before moving to Longmeadow where they lived for the past 43 years.
He is survived by his loving children, Dr. Timothy Kelly Fitzpatrick and his wife, Martha Moriarty, of Weston, VT, Mary Kay Carbone and her husband, Thomas, of Rockport, Dr. Maureen Ann Fitzpatrick, and her wife, Margaret Wasilewski, of Medford, MA, Stacy Santiago and her husband, Luis, of Longmeadow, Kelly Anne Fitzpatrick-Cary and her husband, Stephen, of Springfield, and James Michael Fitzpatrick and his wife, Kristin, of Longmeadow; one sister, Sr. Juliana Fitzpatrick of Omaha, NE; 15 cherished grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Adeline Carbone, who he called my “Little Jewel”. He always enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Edward Fitzpatrick and Thomas O. Fitzpatrick. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Karen Krawczynski, Paula Bessette-Long, Lauren Albano, Diane, Sara, and Susie, and the staff of Baystate Hospice for their loving and compassionate care. Family and friends will gather on Sunday September 22nd for a period of visitation for James from 4-7 PM at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave.
