Jeanine D. Nelson

Jeanine Denise (Soffer) Nelson, 92, beloved wife of 64 years of Blaine R. Nelson who predeceased her in 2009, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her own home in East Longmeadow on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 with her family by her side. Born on September 13, 1924, in Casablanca, Morocco, she was a daughter of Jules and Henrietta (Charrier) Soffer; she was raised and educated in Casablanca, and soon thereafter met her future husband Blaine R. Nelson who was serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. They married in Casablanca in 1945, and in 1955 they settled in East Longmeadow, where they raised their family and resided ever since. Jeanine started selling Avon products door to door, eventually building up a network of clients and friends in the East Longmeadow area that extended over twenty five years. She was also involved with several companies over the years in market research. Jeanine was a parishioner of St. Michael’s Church in East Longmeadow and an active member of the East Longmeadow Senior Center. She was a longtime member of Century Fitness in East Longmeadow and was considered by her family to be the recycler of the year, ten years running. Jeanine was blessed with the coveted green thumb and could turn any garden into a beautiful sanctuary, whether it be vegetables, herbs or flowers. She leaves her loving children, Robert A. Nelson and his wife, Marion, of Ft. Pierce, FL, Yvonne Hayner and her husband, Russ, of West Suffield, CT, Geraldine “Gerry” Stewart and her husband, Thomas, of Springfield, and Blaine D. Nelson and his wife, Lisa, of Winter Garden, FL; seven adored grandchildren, Micki, Shawn, Tara, Denise, Aja, S. Blaine, and Benjamin, and six great grandchildren; her four siblings in France; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews; and many cherished friends. Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 12, for calling hours for Jeanine from 2-4 p.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Ave., Springfield. A private funeral service and burial at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery will be held at the family’s convenience.
