John Edward O’Rourke, Jr. of Longmeadow passed away on Friday, December 18, 2020 at the age of 88 at Holyoke Medical Center.
He joyfully joins his beloved wife of 38 years, Mary Anne (Stearns) O’Rourke, who predeceased him on May 16, 2000, in the afterlife. John was born in Holyoke to loving parents John E. Sr., and Mary (Burke) O’Rourke. He was raised in Holyoke and was a graduate of Holyoke High School.
John served his country honorably as a Military Police Officer, in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He later graduated from Boston College and was a life-long enthusiastic alum.
John enjoyed a long career as an Industrial Engineer, most recently at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford. He was a longtime resident of Longmeadow, and a parishioner and Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge in West Springfield, member, and past president of the Longmeadow Lions Club.
He had many interests and passions, including cars, particularly Mustangs, drawing, singing, and following the Patriots, Red Sox, Boston College sports teams, and UConn Women Huskies Basketball team. He also enjoyed witty wordplay, and will forever be remembered as a very punny guy
John leaves his loving children, Mary Jane O’Rourke (William Davis) of Seabrook, TX; Patricia Anne Muisener (Richard) of Basking Ridge, NJ; and John (Anna) of East Longmeadow, MA.
John leaves his loving grandchildren, Regina Marie and Mary Ellen Davis; Christian and Claire Muisener; and Mary Kate, Michael and Audrey O’Rourke. He leaves his sister Catherine Kelley of Hadley, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was also predeceased by his grandson, John “Johnny” E. O’Rourke, IV; brother, James O’Rourke and sister, Mary Kelley.
John’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2020, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow. Committal prayers and burial with military honors will follow immediately after the Mass at Longmeadow Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday evening for a period of visitation for John from 7-9 p.m. at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Avenue.
