Maria-Teresa Bianca (Gobbi) Cohen, 96, entered into eternal rest on Monday July 16, 2018 in Longmeadow just one day before her 97th birthday. She was the second daughter of six to be born to the late Peter and Henrietta (Pella) Gobbi of Italy and Springfield, MA. Maria was born in Italy, on July 17, 1921 and immigrated to the US, with her parents and sister, Iness, at the age of 1 year. She attended Springfield schools and after receiving a scholarship from The High School of Commerce, Maria attended Boston University, obtaining an Associate’s degree in interior design. Maria then went to work for Pane Furniture in Boston, designed rooms for a new hotel in New Hampshire and then returned to Springfield to work for The Red Lion Furniture Store. On Saturday, June 26, 1965, she married Monte Cohen. They first resided on Laurel Street in Longmeadow and later on Inverness Lane, Longmeadow. They traveled the world together for his work, as President of General Instrument located in Chicopee, MA. After he retired, they enjoyed winters in West Palm Beach, Florida, where she volunteered at local schools teaching English. Their summers were spent in Massachusetts, where she was an avid gardener and collector of antiques. Maria was known throughout her family as always having a perennial plant to share and a piece of furniture to lend. After the death of her husband in 1982 she continued to spend her winters in Florida and doing her volunteer work. Maria’s later years were spent in Longmeadow, without travel, but with great dedication to visiting relatives and friends who were living in nursing homes and donating supplies and money to those in need. Her generosity was publicly recognized, in 2005, at a dinner and ceremony where she was given an award for her support of the Springfield Open Pantry. It was only one of the many organizations to which she was greatly committed. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Iness Parons and her husband Raymond of Longmeadow, Francesca Stone and her husband Albert of Bethesda, MD, Louise Gobbi of Enfield, CT, and Elaine Reavey of McLean, VA and a brother in law Norbert Vangsness of Longmeadow, MA. She leaves one other sister, who will miss her dearly, Carmen Vangsness of Longmeadow, a brother in law, Thomas Reavey Sr. of Cary, NC, 11 nieces and nephews, 16 great nieces and nephews and 8 great great nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to meet for visitation on Monday, July 23, from 9:30 a.m – 10:30 a.m. at Hafey Funeral Home, 494 Belmont Avenue, Springfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church, 519 Longmeadow St., Longmeadow. Committal prayers and burial will follow immediately after the Mass at Longmeadow Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Maria’s memory to the Open Pantry Community Services, P.O. Box 5127, Springfield, MA 01101-5127 or to The Grey House, 22 Sheldon St., Springfield, MA 01107.
