Mary Ellen Desmond Shea, a longtime resident of Dalton Mass died at the home of her brother, Michael and his wife, Joan Shea in Hampden Ma on Saturday, January 11.   Mary Ellen was the daughter of the late Dr. Michael and Fredericka Z Palmer Shea of Dalton Ma.   Born in Pittsfield Ma on July 27, 1937, she was a graduate of the former Dalton High School in Dalton Ma and Our lady of the Elm’s College in 1959.  She earned her graduate degree from Plymouth State College in Plymouth, New Hampshire.     Mary Ellen retired from the Pittsfield School System after many years of teaching.  She traveled the world with her friend Ann Goggins, also a retired teacher in Pittsfield. In addition to her parents, Mary Ellen was predeceased by a sister, Dr. Fredericka P Shea in 2004.    She leaves her brother, Michael (Joan) of Hampden Mass and her nephews Michael of Hampden, Kevin (Jennifer), of Wilbraham, and Tim (Jessica) of East Longmeadow.   She also leaves Great nephew Liam Rothschild-Shea of Amherst and Wilbraham, Great Nieces, Brynnan Rothschild-Shea of Brighton Ma, and Maeve and Gracyn Rothschild-Shea of Wilbraham Ma.   Mary Ellen also leaves her cousins from the Cachat family in Dalton who have been so supportive over the years to her wellbeing. Mary Ellen also leaves many cousins from the Shea and Drennan and Richards’ Families in Massachusetts. In addition to her family, Mary Ellen leaves her dear friends Mary Stein of New Jersey, Ann Goggins and Pat Woodlock of Pittsfield and Betty Fitzgerald of West Springfield, among others.   

In lieu of flowers, the family would like all donations sent to The Memory Cafe, in care of The Friends of the Hampden Seniors, 104 Allen Street, Hampden, Ma  01036. Thank you to Beacon Hospice for Mary Ellen’s special care and attention and HomeWatch Care Givers for their exceptional assistance to Mary Ellen. Family and friends are invited to join us for a Mass at St Agnes Church on Main Street Dalton on Thursday, January 16, at 10 AM.
