Michael F. Gelinas, a long-time resident of Longmeadow died July 12, 2019 at the age of 80 in the company of his wife and three daughters. Mike dedicated his life to teaching and to his family. He began his career at Cathedral High School in Springfield, MA where he taught history and directed plays and musicals. During his time at LHS, he was a class advisor, advisor to the school newspaper, and manager of the school bookstore. He retired from teaching in 2000, but continued to manage athletic ticket sales at LHS for several years. Mike became very involved in the Longmeadow Historical Society during his retirement. He joined in 1992 and served as the president from 2010-2015. During that time, he acted as chair of the Longmeadow Days committee, and rekindled local interest in the society. Mike researched and published numerous articles about local history, and continued to share his passion through displays at Longmeadow Days, walking tours of the Green and field trips with students from Williams MS. In 2015, he was named an honorary board member of the society and the primary Longmeadow Town Historian. Mike loved to travel and was an avid reader, especially historical texts.
