On Monday evening, June 14, 2021, Norma Marie (Savoit) Ianello, beloved wife of 72 years, of James J. Ianello passed away peacefully at her residence in Springfield, only to be joined shortly after by her loving husband, James, who passed away at the same residence on Wednesday evening, June 16, 2021. Both Norma and James were born in Springfield, MA and were lifelong residents of Springfield. Norma was born on August 6, 1928, a daughter of Peter and Mabel (Noonan) Savoit and James was born on May 10, 1928, a son of James and Frances (Guarnera) Ianello. James and Norma both attended local schools in Springfield. Norma was a graduate of Cathedral High School and Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee. James was also a graduate of Cathedral High School and Western New England College. They were married in 1949 and set out to fulfill a long and happy life together, while raising ten children. James enjoyed a long career as a packaging engineer, retiring from Squib in Gloucester, MA. Norma was an elementary school teacher at Holy Name School. They were both longtime parishioners of Holy Name Church in Springfield. Norma was a member of the Catholic Women’s Club and a Eucharistic Minister at Holy Name Church and James was a member of the Men’s Club at Holy Name. As an Alumni, Norma remained very active with Elms College. She loved to entertain at the family home and enjoyed baking and spending time with her beloved grandchildren. James was a devout Red Sox fan and an avid golfer. Together they enjoyed numerous camping trips with all their children, usually at Nickerson State Park in Cape Cod. They loved to dance together and were usually the first people on the dance floor, and the last to leave. They leave behind their loving children, Richard Ianello and his wife, Teresa, of Longmeadow, David P. Ianello of Florida, Claire Angers and her husband, David, of Otis, MA, Debbie O’Brien of East Longmeadow, Mark Ianello and his wife, Elle, of Newburyport, MA, Christopher Ianello of Cincinnati OH, Jim Ianello of East Brunswick, NJ, Mary Russo and her husband, Andy, of Enfield, CT, Cathy Turowsky and her husband, John, of East Longmeadow, and Norma Ianello of New Jersey, 13 cherished grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. James leaves a brother, John Ianello and a sister, Joanne Ianello both of Springfield. In addition to their parents, they were predeceased by their beloved four-year-old son, Peter Ianello in 1955. Norma was predeceased by her brother, Robert Savoit and sisters, Dorothy McDowell and Claire O’Brien and James was predeceased by his sister, Millie Plantier. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday, June 21, for a period of visitation from 10-11:30 a.m. for Norma and James at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 1900 Allen St., Springfield. Committal prayers and burial will follow immediately after the mass at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Springfield.
