Philip H. Ryan died peacefully on March 31, 2021. Phil was 88 years old and lived a very happy life. Phil was a graduate of Villanova University and was a huge supporter of the institution’s academic and sports programs. He endowed an education fund for the benefit of Villanova’s students. After graduating from Villanova University, he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. Phil was the Treasurer and Secretary of Ballard Engineering, Inc. which was later sold to Koch Industries. Many charitable organizations benefited as a result of his business success, including Villanova University, Mercy Medical Center, and Bay Path University. One of the most rewarding events in his life was a substantial gift to Bay Path University, resulting in the Philip H. Ryan Health Science Center for the advancement in nursing, occupational therapy and other healthcare programs. Phil was on the Board of Bay Path University for many years and also assisted financially in the purchase of the playing fields used by Bay Path University students. Phil was also on the Board of Directors of AAA of Pioneer Valley and many other organizations. Phil was predeceased by his father, John T. Ryan and his mother, Helen (Rougier) Ryan, his brother, John E. Ryan and his sister, Clare E. Ryan. Phil was also predeceased by his friend and long-time companion Helen Boron Modzelewski. He had cherished friendships with Sister Caritas, Alice Kennedy, Anne Hart, Joanne Dunn and David and Margaret Modzelewski. Phil resided at Providence Place for many years and was always appreciative of the support he received from staff and administrators. He felt that Providence Place was truly his home. In lieu of flowers, Phil would be pleased for contributions in his memory to Sisters of Providence, Providence Place, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke MA 01040. Visitation will take place on Thursday, 4/8 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne Church, 30 College St., Chicopee, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m., followed by entombment at St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109.
