Richard J. Footit of Longmeadow, MA passed away Friday, June 8th of natural causes at the age of 92 comfortably at home with his family by his side. Richard, who went by “Dick,” was born September 9th, 1925 in Florence, MA and raised in Springfield. He was the son of William and Gertrude White Footit, and one of eight children. Dick was a graduate of Cathedral High School and received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, after enlisting in the Navy in 1943 at the age of 17 and serving aboard the USS Hayter Destroyer Escort. He soon met the love and support of his life, Joan Roy. They started a family of four girls and four boys, followed by 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dick began his career at the Springfield Armory, followed by a job with Gulf Oil. With this industry experience, he established Bay Oil Company in Chicopee, which continues to be run by his family today. When he was not at “the plant” (family nickname for Bay Oil), Dick could often be found on the golf course where he was known to have made six holes in one. He also had a passion for football and was a huge fan of Notre Dame. He loved spending time outdoors in his vegetable garden and doing fix-it projects around the house. He was also an avid reader. During the summer he enjoyed spending time with family at the “cottage” on Lake Damon in Chesterfield and on Cape Cod overlooking the ocean. Dick was known for his unparalleled work ethic and dedication to his family. He prided himself and lived by the mantra “a family that works together, stays together.” He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. His family will forever cherish the memories they created together and the qualities that he instilled in them. Dick is survived by his wife, Joan, his two sisters, Gertrude Britton and Susan Szetela, his eight children, Elaine Howes and Donald Mientka, Rosemary and William Lanigan, Patricia and John Real, William and Faith Footit, Mary and John Gentile, John and Gina Footit, James and Cathrine Footit, and Paul and Barbara Footit.
