Robert Martin Ryan, Jr., 59, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Springfield, on Saturday, February 16, 2019. Born on May 26, 1959, in Springfield, MA, a beloved son of Robert M. Ryan and Mary (Martin) Ryan, he was a lifelong resident of Springfield. Bobby attended Holy Name School and was a graduate of Cathedral High School, later attending Wilbraham Monson Academy Preparatory School. He began his career early, working for the family business, Ryan Drug Company, where he started off in the delivery department and later in bookkeeping. Bobby would later work for CVS and several other retail stores as a retail manager. He was a talented athlete and while attending Cathedral and Wilbraham Monson, he played on their varsity football teams. His infatuation with sports started at an early age, and he was a devoted fan of the New England Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics and Bruins. He enjoyed watching movies, especially those by Steven Spielberg, and listening to the many classic songs by Bruce Springsteen. Bobby had a big heart and was a loving father. His family and many friends will miss his presence dearly. Bobby is survived by his wife, Donna Ryan of Springfield and his two loving sons, Patrick J. Ryan of Springfield, and Connor M. Ryan and his wife, Allyson, of Clarksville, TN; his step-mother, Rosa (Porta) Ryan of Springfield; his siblings, Kathleen Ryan Reed, of Austin, TX, Marie Ryan–Brackett, and her husband, Wax of Friendship, ME, Maureen Ryan of Florence, MA, John C. Ryan and his wife, Ellen of East Longmeadow, Julia Campbell of Chicopee, MA and Brunswick, ME, and Linda Lavallee and her husband, Matthew of South Hadley; several aunts and uncles, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Elizabeth Josephine Ryan “Betty Jo” in 1975. A period of visitation will be held for him on Monday, Feb. 25, from 9 – 10 a.m. at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Ave., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Holy Name Church, 323 Dickinson St., Springfield. His burial will be private and held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.
