Robert James Van Wagner Sr.

June 23, 1935 ~ February 27, 2020 (age 84)



Robert James Van Wagner, Sr., 84, beloved husband of Maryann (Stricker) Van Wagner, who predeceased him on December 11, 2018, passed away peacefully at the Soldier’s Home in Holyoke on Thursday, February 27, 2020. Robert was born in Springfield, MA, on June 23, 1935, a loving son of Frank and Ruth (Dillon) Van Wagner. He was raised and educated in Springfield and was a graduate of the High School of Commerce and later attended and graduated from Western New England College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business. Robert served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a longtime resident of Longmeadow and most recently was a purchasing officer for Mass Mutual Life Insurance Company, for over 10 years. Robert was an avid skier, who skied just about every mountain in Vermont and many other mountains throughout New England. He loved reading, especially books about history, and enjoyed camping with his family. Robert leaves behind his loving children, Cassandra Van Wagner of Northampton, Laurie Shea of Ware, MA. And Robert J. Van Wagner, Jr. and his wife Karen, of Longmeadow; brother, Stuart Van Wagner of East Longmeadow; four cherished grandchildren, Michael Shea, Cassandra LeClair and her husband, Nick, Dylan Shea and his wife, Jessica, and Nathaniel Van Wagner, and three great grandchildren, Carter, Abel, and Silas LeClair; several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his brother, Stanley Van Wagner. Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, March 4, at 10 a.m. at the chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, for Robert’s committal service with military honors. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations in Robert’s name can be made to the Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800, Miami, FL 33131.
