Robert “Si” D. Shafer, 80, beloved husband of 59 years of Sandra R. (Cormier) Shafer and longtime resident of Springfield, passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Si was born on March 19, 1940, in Gardners, PA, a beloved son of William H. Jr. and Marion G. (McCauslin) Shafer. He was raised and educated in Gardners, PA and graduated from East Berlin High School. Si served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After completing his service in the Air Force, he had a long career as a plumber that spanned over 31 years. He was first employed at Orenstein Plumbing, before becoming a self-employed plumber, and later retiring from Al Shaw Plumbing. After his retirement, Si continued to work and finished the last 7 years of his new career at Mass Mutual working in their Pension Department. He was a talented wood worker and was an avid candlepin bowler. Si was a faithful fan of the Patriots, Red Sox, the New England revolution and NASCAR. He enjoyed sharing many special moments and events with his family. And adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Si leaves behind his beloved wife, Sandra, of Springfield and children, Amy Riley and her husband, John, and Pamela Shafer all of Springfield, Robert Shafer of Florence, MA, Tammy Shafer and spouse, Cynthia of Chicopee, and William Shafer and his wife, Sheri of Burbank, CA; brothers, William R. Shafer of Maryland and Fred Shafer and his wife Anna of Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Timothy, Robin, Megan, Naomi, Nicole, Kelsey, and Cory, and great grandchildren, Ines, Wynter, Leo, Zadiya, Isys, Shay, Shamarie and Riley. In addition to his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, Charles Shafer, and sisters, Shirley Baker and Jolene Auchey. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, February 11, for a period of visitation from 11:45AM – 12:45PM at Hafey Springfield Chapels, 494 Belmont Avenue, followed by a service at 12:45PM in the funeral home. Committal prayers and burial with military honors will follow immediately after the service at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam.
