Sylvester Reid Murphy, beloved companion of 36 years of Rosemary E. Collier, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at his home in West Springfield at the age of 82. Murphy was born on February 1, 1939 in Catskill, NY, a son of Ralph C. and Virginia D. (Vaughn) Murphy, he was a longtime resident of West Springfield. He served his country honorably as a PFC in the U.S. Army. Murphy was a hardworking individual and dedicated provider for his family. He was a talented cook and was a Chef for many years at the former Yankee Peddler in Holyoke. Murphy would later run his own business as a steam cleaner. He serviced the restaurant duct work at many local restaurants and fast food restaurants, such as McDonald’s. He was also a crossing guard for several years in West Springfield. Sylvester leaves behind his companion, Rosemary of West Springfield, children, Sylvester R. Murphy, Jr. of Everett, MA, Sebastian Murphy of Holyoke, Rodney Mayfield of Springfield, Ronald Collier, Jr. of Ashfield, Sharon Collier of Springfield, and Kathleen Kentch of Wisconsin, siblings, Bishop Rev. Dr. Judy Murphy Jack of Albany, Mrs. Pecolia Macklin of Greenbush, NY, Dr. Willie Francis Murphy of Rochester, NY and Corrine Murphy of Utica, NY, twelve grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Family and friends are invited to gather on Thursday, October 7, 2021 for Murphy’s committal service at 3 p.m. with military honors at the chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main St., Agawam, MA 01001.
