Thomas Gaither DeVane, 71, of Springfield, Massachusetts, was called Home on Saturday morning, October 20, 2018, after fighting through a long illness.Tom was born in Roseboro, NC on July 23, 1947, and only son to Gaither and Flossie DeVane. Tom went into the Air Force right after high school and served 32 years of service. During his time in the service he did several tours, including but not limited to Vietnam and Desert Storm. Tom also worked as a military police officer at the Chicopee, MA base.
When Tom wasn't serving his country and protecting people he was indulging in his true passion, cooking. Tom was a very hard worker and loved cooking so much he put himself through Culinary Arts School, while still working Full Time. Tom loved the whole process of cooking, from shopping to prepping to preparing the plates. Everyone that knew Tom had a favorite dish they Loved from him from his broccoli cornbread to his banana pudding. Even to the very end Tom talked about going back to his job as a chef, just because of the joy it brought him.
Outside of cooking, Tom also liked to go to the gym and was also a previous Power Lifter and won The World Heavyweight Championship in '78 and '79. Working out and weight lifting was so important to him that Tom even had a weight room built in the basement of his home.
As big and strong of a guy that Tom was he was also very laid back and loving. He was not a man of too many words, but his actions and gestures said it all for him. He has pulled and guided his children and stepchildren through many of life's obstacles, sometimes without saying a word. To his dying day he loved and adored his "beautiful wife", Helen, and would tell anyone who asked, and it was apparent while being around them and in any pictures they took.
With Tom's passing, he leaves behind his loving wife, Helen Owens-DeVane, his mother, Flossie M. DeVane, predeceased by his father, Gaither DeVane, predeceased by his sister, Cynthia DeVane. His three children: Thomas DeVane, Rashidah DeVane, and Ahmad DeVane. His stepchildren: Dyanne, Ruby, and Yolanda Maddox and his ten grandchildren Brandon, Thomas III, Nicole, Daquon, Da'Hiem, Ja'Wan, Jaylon, Josiah, Adore, and Azalea. Tom will be truly missed by many friends and family and remembered through many beautiful memories.
Calling hours will be Monday October 29, 2018 at Third Baptist Church, 149 Walnut St. Springfield, MA 01105 at 9:30a.m., followed by the Funeral Services from 10:30a.m.-12:30p.m. Burial at Veterans Memorial, 1390 Main St. Agawam, MA at 1:00 pm.
