When Tom wasn't serving his country and protecting people he was indulging in his true passion, cooking. Even to the very end Tom talked about going back to his job as a chef, just because of the joy it brought him.

As big and strong of a guy that Tom was he was also very laid back and loving. He was not a man of too many words, but his actions and gestures said it all for him. He has pulled and guided his children and stepchildren through many of life's obstacles, sometimes without saying a word. To his dying day he loved and adored his "beautiful wife", Helen, and would tell anyone who asked, and it was apparent while being around them and in any pictures they took.
