William (Billy/Bill) Gregory Montana of Springfield passed away unexpectedly and tragically on Friday February 28, 2020. He was born March 10, 1951, son of Alfred L. (deceased) and Jean Picknally Montana of East Longmeadow. He was predeceased by his youngest brother Alfred R. Montana. Billy leaves behind to mourn his death two brothers and their spouses, James and Deborah Montana of Waterford CT and Robert and Patricia Montana of Longmeadow as well as his sisters and their spouses Jean and Richard Moore, Lisa and Scott Skala all of Wilbraham. In addition he leaves thirteen nieces and nephews and three great nieces and nephews - each of whom he treasured. Bill graduated from Cathedral High School, Springfield in 1969 and from Lowell Technical Institute in 1973 where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. At LTI he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and often attended their annual reunions. Although he held many different jobs over the years, most recently he worked as a cab driver for Yellow Cab of East Springfield. It was a job he truly enjoyed. Bill was a man of deep faith and usually attended mass at St. Michael's Cathedral in Springfield - the city he loved and whose growth he supported for forty five years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in East Longmeadow for many years. Those who knew him best were aware of his exceptional artistic talents and his generosity. Bill was an organ donor and his family is hopeful that his passing allowed someone else the gift of a longer life. Not to be forgotten, he frequently attended American Hockey League games and was a lifelong Red Sox and Patriots fan. Family and friends are invited to meet directly on Wednesday, March 4, at 11:30 a.m. for Bill’s Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael’s Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. At the request of the family the burial will be private. There are no calling hours. If you would like to honor Bill, donations may be made to the East Longmeadow Knights of Columbus or a charity of your choice . www.hafeyfuneralservice.com
